Uniform Policy

  • The unique mission of Oliver Wolcott Technical High School (OWTHS) requires students to be aware that appearance is an important part of the technical school learning environment. The aim of this dress code is to promote a school-wide sense of professionalism and a positive, safe, and non-disruptive learning environment.

    Academic Attire

    Tops

    • Approved Shirts: Students may wear OWTS logoed collared polos or T-shirts (short or long sleeve).
    • Activity Apparel: All school-sponsored apparel ordered through school activities (e.g., Athletics, NHS, ECE) is allowed.
    • Outerwear: 
      • OWTS-branded sweatshirts or hoodies are permitted.
      • Plain (no-logo) sweatshirts or hoodies in solid black, navy, or gray are permitted.
      • Vests in solid colors (black, blue, gray, and khaki) are permitted.
    • Trade Apparel: Trade-specific shirts and sweatshirts are allowed to be worn during academic cycles.
    • General Requirement: All other tops must be OWTS-branded and purchased from one of the approved vendors:

    Bottoms

    • Pants: Khaki-style pants or dress pants in black or tan.
    • Jeans: Blue or black jeans are permitted. Absolutely no rips, tears, or holes.
    • Sweatpants: Sweatpants are permitted in solid black, blue, or gray.
    • Shorts and Skirts: Must be mid-thigh or longer.

    Trade and Technology Attire

    • Uniform Requirements: Specific shop uniforms remain mandatory for students in grades 10, 11, and 12. This includes a top and bottom of designated color and material with the required logo.
    • Headwear: If hats are permitted within a specific shop, they must be OWTS-branded. This applies to:
      • Automotive
      • Collision Repair
      • Plumbing, Heating, Cooling
      • Electrical
      • Culinary
      • Carpentry
    • Freshmen/Exploratory:
      • Exploratory T-shirts are required for students in the exploratory cycle.
      • Work boots and safety glasses are required for all freshmen during Exploratory.

    Footwear and Accessories

    • General Requirement: Closed-toe shoes are required at all times.
    • Prohibited Footwear: Slippers, moccasins, slides, Crocs, mules, or flip-flops are strictly prohibited.

    Additional Requirements Trade & Academic

    In order to maintain a proper and healthy educational atmosphere, students must be suitably dressed and groomed. The State Board of Education, the CTHSS, and OWTHS encourages students to dress in a manner that reflects pride and respect for themselves and their community.  Restrictions on student appearance may be applied whenever the dress or grooming interferes with the learning process, is disruptive, is unsafe, or is contrary to law. Without limitation, the following are examples of attire that is prohibited from wear in the school buildings during the academic school day or at school-sponsored activities:

    •  All head coverings of any kind, including but not limited to scarves, bandanas, masks, kerchiefs, athletic headbands, hats, caps or hoods, unless worn for bonafide religious reasons. Notwithstanding the foregoing, health and safety concerns take precedence.
    • Sunglasses, unless required by a doctor’s order.
    • Spiked or studded bracelets, oversized or multi-finger rings, belts or any other article or attire with spikes or studs attached.
    • Attire or accessories that depict logos or emblems that encourage the use of drugs, tobacco products or alcoholic beverages.
    • Attire that may create a hostile school environment or disrupt the educational process such as clothing with harassing symbols, pictures or vulgar, illegal, racial, sexist or other discriminatory viewpoints which denigrate others on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual preference or disability.
    • Gang-related attire, including but not limited to gang colors, jewelry emblems, badges, symbols, signs or other insignia which are evidence of membership in or affiliation with a gang.
    • Writing on, altering or defacing the school uniform is prohibited.
    • Ripped, torn or cut off clothing is not permitted.
    • Clothing that is overly revealing, including, but not limited to shirts and/or blouses that reveal the abdomen, chest, or undergarments; tank-tops; see-through clothing; shorts (mid-thigh shorts are acceptable); miniskirts; or pants that reveal the navel, upper thigh or undergarments. Underwear must be covered. Cleavage must be covered
    • Pajamas or clothing intended for nightwear are prohibited.  
    • All pants must fit and be properly fastened. Students shall not wear pants that when fastened, sag or fit below the natural waist.

     

    All OWTS students will be issued a picture identification card.  Identification cards shall be carried while on school property or at school sponsored events.
